Counselling Modalities
Person-centered therapy uses a non-authoritative approach that allows clients to take more of a lead in discussions so that, in the process, they will discover their own solutions. The therapist acts as a compassionate facilitator, listening without judgment and acknowledging the client’s experience without moving the conversation in another direction. The therapist is there to encourage and support the client and to guide the therapeutic process without interrupting or interfering with the client’s process of self-discovery.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving. Its goal is to change patterns of thinking or behavior that are behind people’s difficulties, and so change the way they feel. It is used to help treat a wide range of issues in a person’s life, from sleeping difficulties or relationship problems, to drug and alcohol abuse or anxiety and depression. CBT works by changing people’s attitudes and their behavior by focusing on the thoughts, images, beliefs and attitudes that are held (a person’s cognitive processes) and how these processes relate to the way a person behaves, as a way of dealing with emotional problems.
Since early development, SFBT has not only become one of the leading schools of brief therapy, it has become a major influence in such diverse fields as business, social policy and education. Described as a practical, goal-driven model, a hallmark of SFBT is its emphasis on clear, concise, realistic goal negotiations. The SFBT approach assumes that all clients have some knowledge of what would make their life better, even though they may need some (at times, considerable) help describing the details of their better life and that everyone who seeks help already
possesses at least the minimal skills necessary to create solutions.
Holistic Counselling, working with all dimensions of the Human psyche, mind, physical, spiritual and emotional allows a holistic therapy that gives long term results on many levels that are often unknown for the client. Drawing from Te ao Māori models and modalities, like, Te Whare Tapa Wha and Pōwhiri Poutama combined with mindfulness help to create a genuine holistic therapy that can be used bi-culturally and multi-culturally.
Imago relationship therapy is a form of couples counseling and coaching that helps those in committed relationships work out their misunderstandings, reduce conflict, and rediscover ways to bond, communicate, and find common ground. Much of the work in Imago workshops and private therapy involves learning to recognize how early childhood relationship experiences affect how we communicate, behave, and respond to others in adult relationships.

Intimacy is an important topic in couples counselling and often an indicator of where the relationship is at.
Although not specifically fully trained in the above Modalities, SFBT, CBT, PCT and te Whare Tapa Wha, were the foundation modalities used for training throughout the NMIT Degree program and form the basis to my
own counselling approach.
